HISTORIC PRESERVATION IN LUNENBERG, NOVA SCOTIA JUNE 18-22, 2007
Lunenberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is an active seaport and home of the Lunenberg Heritage Society and their museum, the Knaut-Rhuland House, built in 1973, and one of the best preserved of its era in Canada. . (see website: www.lunenburgheritagesociety.ca) Our work will make a significant contribution to the ongoing development of this new museum, and provide the Lunenburgh Heritage Society with tools necessary to move the house restoration forward. With our help, artifacts within the house will be catalogued and a detailed survey for the building will be undertaken. Accommodations will be at the Topmast Motel, overlooking the Lunenburg harbor. ANTIGUA HISTORIC FORTS ARCHEOLOGY PROJECT NOV, 18-24, 2007
Antigua was an important center for the British military in the 17th through 19th centuries, and many historic military structures and sites remain. Volunteers will be assisting Antigua archeologist, Reg Murphy with archeology related to the historic military sites in Antigua. Tasks will include digging, sorting, washing, and laboratory work. Included are lectures and field trips related to archeology, and the history and architecture of Antigua. Accommodation at beach front hotel; meals at various local restaurants.

JEWISH CEMETERY INVENTORY, HUNT'S BAY JAMAICA JAN 27-FEB 2, 2007
The Hunt's Bay Cemetery is one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Jamaica serving the Jewish population of Kingston and Port Royal. Jews escaping from prosecution in Europe settled in many Caribbean islands, and were instrumental in sugar plantation technology. This cemetery dates from the early 1800's. HERITAGE PERSERVATION IN NEVIS - FEB 24- MAR 7, 2008
CVE will be working on mapping, documenting, and photographing former sugar plantation sites which include a wind tower, used for grinding sugar cane, sugar factory buildings and other related structures. PRESERVATION PROJECTS IN NEVIS
We can provide you with a custom designed volunteer preservation project in beautiful Nevis. We will arrange a work project as well as the dates, and accommodations to suit your interests, abilities, schedule and budget. Work can include archival and display work at one of the museums in Nevis or gardening, clearing, or light construction work on historic structures. Brimstone Hill Fortress on the island of St. Kitts is known as the Gibraltar of the West Indies. Unfortunately, time and the environment are beginning to take their toll on this magnificent 18th century UNESCO World Heritage site. Our first project will be to clear vegetation from the magazine and water cistern at the Magazine Bastion. When the vegetation has been removed from the masonry work, an assessment of the structures will be made, and photographs and measurements taken. Participants will be exposed to the history of St. Kitts and the West Indies, enjoy visits to some of the more off-the beaten track parts of the island and meet and interact with some really interesting people. CVE will be partnering with RARE, an organization involved with sustainable tourism which benefits the environment as well s the local economy. Work will include restoring and upgrading La Sagesse sugar factory building, the site o a proposed historical site for tourists, as well as a cultural center with shops, museum, restaurant. Participants will be working with David Rollinson on archeology at the Wingfield Plantation- a former sugar plantation with fascinating ruins including a factory, great house, and aqueduct to the former water wheel used for grinding sugar cane. Participants will be exposed to the history of St. Kitts and the West Indies, enjoy visits to some of the more off-the beaten track parts of the island and meet and interact with some really interesting people. 3822 ST CROIX HISTORIC CEMETERY PROJECT JAN 27-FEB3, 2008
Volunteers will continue on with the inventory of St. Croix's cemeteries. CVE has worked for many years documenting Moravian, Methodist, Catholic, and public cemeteries in St. Croix. St. Croix was a center for sugar plantations during the Danish rule, and still retains many historic plantations and forts, as well as the wonderful cities of Christiansted and Frederiksted. 14918 SAN SALVADOR, BAHAMAS, ARCHEOLOGY PROJECT MAR 15-22, 2008
San Salvador Island, Commonwealth of the Bahamas, is one of the eastern most islands of this archipelago off the southeast coast of Florida, and was the first landfall of Columbus in 1492. The island is pristine, ringed with beautiful beaches. We will be working with archeologist, John Winter, who has had over 25 years experience working in archeology on San Salvador. The island was first inhabited by Indians who migrated from South America, and later by Loyalists, fleeing the US after the revolutionary war. Archeological finds have included Indian, Spanish, and other European colonists artifacts. Accommodations are double occupancy, motel-type rooms at the Gerace Research Center. |
